Chapter 12

"A ngus, please, wait!" Little Hawk cried out as she stepped towards him, but he was already gone. She stood for a moment, regaining her composure. Little Hawk brought her hand to her mouth and ran her fingers over her tingling lips. She'd never felt that way with Lone Coyote.

She stroked Shadow's neck. "That was nice...."

Then she got mad and stomped her foot. What was wrong with him? Why did he run? Couldn't he see they belonged together? Maybe he didn't want her after all. Fighting tears, she stormed out of the stable to the house and pounded on the kitchen door.

Elizabeth answered, concern on her face. "Oh, come in. Is everything all right?"

Little Hawk composed herself. She hadn't realized how hard she was banging on the door in her anger. "Hello, Elizabeth. I'm sorry, my temper just got the better o' me for a moment."

"Ye sure nothing's wrong?" Elizabeth stood with the door open for a moment before Little Hawk stepped in, and she closed it behind her.

"Aye. I'm fine."

Elizabeth removed a piece of straw from Little Hawk's braid. "Been in the stable, have ye?" She winked knowingly.

Little Hawk blushed. "Aye. That man will drive me crazy."

"Angus?"

"Who else?" Little Hawk pulled the dried roots bundled with thread from her bag. She handed them to her friend. Suddenly, she wasn't sure if she wanted to talk about this. "These are for Hannah. How is she doing with the cold and damp weather?"

"She's doin' well, especially considering being locked in the house for so long." Elizabeth looked sympathetically at Little Hawk as she laid the bundle on the table. "Ye want to talk?"

"Nay. I need to work this out myself." Little Hawk picked up her pouch as if to leave but paused, looking at Elizabeth. She threw the bag back onto the table. "But how can a man with such a good mind be so stupid sometimes?"

"Ah, give him time. He needs to figure out who he is first before knowing where he is going. Sometimes men take longer at that. I thought I'd never get Joel. He was almost thirty when we married, same as Angus."

"I suppose ye are right. Martha Bryan said much the same thing. But right now, he's so tied up in working out this murder; that his mind's not on much else. Angus wants to clear Joel's name."

"That's kind of him, but I don't think anyone blames Joel anymore. I know there were rumors about him since the crate had his name on it. But most folks know better. He and Angus will leave for Poplar Hall tomorrow to fetch Joel's tools. They want to talk to Mr. Dickinson to see if he has any thoughts on who sent that crate. It came from his place, ye know. But he was in Philadelphia at the time. I don't suppose ye've heard anything on your rounds?"

"Nay—but I'm heading home to the village. When I make my next rounds, I'll see if I can find out anything. Or see if my brothers have heard any news.
